Can data flow from Attio back into Chargebee?

No, and it is the first thing to know about this pairing. Chargebee is supported as a source, meaning Polytomic reads subscription, invoice and customer data out of it, but it is not available as a destination, so nothing can be written back. If you need CRM data to reach billing, that has to happen through Chargebee's own tooling. Everything else on this page describes the one direction that does work, which is Chargebee into Attio.

What billing data is worth putting on the CRM record?

In practice, the summary values a person needs at a glance: plan, subscription status, renewal date and recurring revenue, written as attributes on the Attio company. Because those become real attributes rather than free text, they can drive views and filters inside Attio. Detailed records such as individual invoices or subscription line items are better on a custom object, since there are many of them per customer.

How are billing customers matched to CRM records?

On the identifiers you already have rather than Attio's own. Companies upsert on domain and people on email address, and both get dedicated handling for exactly this purpose. If your billing records carry an identifier you also store in Attio as a unique attribute, you can match on that instead, which is the more precise option. Matching on a non unique attribute will update every record that matches, so it is best avoided.

What are the constraints on the Attio side?

Write modes are create, update, and create or update, with no delete, so a cancelled subscription updates the record rather than removing it. Attribute and list structure has to exist in Attio beforehand, since a sync cannot create new lists or attributes, though it can add new select and multiselect options when that setting is enabled. Records can be added to an existing list but not removed from one.
