Does data leave Azure in this pairing?

Accepted Answer

Yes. There is no direct path from Blob Storage into MotherDuck, so Polytomic reads your blobs using the Azure credentials on the connection, re-encodes the records as Parquet, and uploads them to the S3 staging location MotherDuck loads from. Data therefore moves from Azure through Polytomic into AWS before MotherDuck reads it. Cross cloud and cross region egress can apply, which is worth costing out if the volumes are large.

How does authentication work on each side?

Accepted Answer

Independently. On the Azure side you can use a storage account key, a shared access signature, service principal credentials, or delegated user OAuth, and the connection can be scoped to a container and prefix. Managed identity is not supported. On the MotherDuck side, staging needs its own AWS credentials with read, write, and delete on the staging prefix. Neither set of credentials is passed to the other service.

How are new blobs detected?

By fingerprinting the listing. Each run lists the matching blobs and builds a fingerprint from each key plus its content hash; if nothing changed the run reports no new data, and if the fingerprint changed the matching set is read again. There is no event notification path here, so blobs are found by listing rather than being pushed. That makes this pairing well suited to scheduled batch loads rather than near real time ingestion.

Does this work with ADLS Gen2?

Accepted Answer

Partly, and it is worth testing for your setup. The connection uses the Azure Blob endpoint and container API rather than a dedicated ADLS implementation, so a storage account with hierarchical namespace enabled generally works through its Blob compatible endpoint and ordinary reads and writes should function. What is not implemented are the filesystem specific APIs and access control list handling, so anything depending on those is not guaranteed.
