MotherDuck

Polytomic connects MotherDuck to your data warehouse, databases, and SaaS tools for analytics ETL and reverse ETL. Load data into MotherDuck from over a hundred sources, and sync modelled results out to Salesforce, HubSpot, and more, without writing code.

Full bidirectional ETL

Sync in both directions between MotherDuck and your systems.

Optimized for scale

Efficient operations minimize MotherDuck compute costs.

DuckDB structured types

STRUCT, LIST, MAP, and JSON map to real objects and arrays, not strings.

Example workflows

Load CRM, billing, and product data into MotherDuck

What you can sync

Move data between MotherDuck and your data warehouse, databases, and SaaS tools, in both directions.

From MotherDuck

Tables across schemas
Custom SQL as a model source, including over views
DuckDB structured types as objects and arrays
Tracking field incremental reads

To MotherDuck

Tables, created and migrated automatically
Create, update, upsert, and replace
Parquet staged loading through your own S3 bucket
Structured types written natively

How it works

Connect MotherDuck with an access token and Polytomic works against your named database through the DuckDB MotherDuck extension. Reads discover schemas, tables, and DuckDB types; writes create destination tables and migrate columns as your sources change.

Loading works the way MotherDuck's own team recommends. Rather than inserting row by row, Polytomic stages temporary Parquet files in your S3 bucket and has MotherDuck read them directly, then clears the staging files. It is substantially more efficient than the alternative.

  • Connect MotherDuck with an access token and database name
  • Read tables, or query views and custom SQL through a model
  • DuckDB STRUCT, LIST, MAP, and JSON map to objects and arrays
  • Writes stage Parquet in your S3 bucket for MotherDuck to ingest
  • Write with create, update, upsert, and replace modes
  • Monitor sync health, record volume, and failures from one interface

How to set up

Authentication is a MotherDuck access token rather than a host and password. You also supply the database name you want to work against. Database names accept letters, digits, hyphens, underscores, slashes, and dots.

How to get connected
  1. 1In MotherDuck, generate an access token
  2. 2For writes, prepare an S3 bucket and AWS credentials for staging
  3. 3In Polytomic, navigate to Connections, then Add Connection, then MotherDuck
  4. 4Enter the token and database name, and staging details if writing
  5. 5Test the connection
  6. 6Select tables or build a model, set a schedule, and click Save

See the documentation for full setup details.
