How does a spreadsheet row become a document?

One row becomes one BSON document, with the columns as top level fields. If you want structure rather than a flat document, map to dotted destination field names such as address.city and Polytomic serializes them into nested documents rather than leaving keys with dots in their names.

Will my dates arrive as dates?

Only if the sheet says so. A spreadsheet cell has no intrinsic type, so a column defaults to text. Where you have set Google data validation rules, columns are promoted to numeric, date or boolean, and datetimes are converted to BSON datetime values on write. Setting validation on the sheet is the only lever that controls this.

Does it read only what changed?

No. Sheets exposes nothing to checkpoint against, so every ETL run scans the whole tab in batched row ranges. For the reference tables people usually keep in spreadsheets that is perfectly fine, and for anything large it is the wrong tool regardless of destination.

What happens if a row is deleted from the sheet?

Accepted Answer

Its document stays in MongoDB. There is no delete mode on this destination, so removing a row from the spreadsheet does not remove the document. If the sheet is your system of record and rows genuinely come and go, that mismatch has to be handled in your application.

Why put a spreadsheet into a document store?

Accepted Answer

Usually because an application needs a mapping somebody maintains by hand: account tiers, per customer feature flags, territory assignments. Writing it into a collection your service already reads turns a manual lookup into an ordinary query, with no second datastore to introduce.
