What makes the tenant object worth using?

It is the one Plain object whose shape you control. Tenant field definitions are specific to your Plain workspace and are discovered automatically and refreshed periodically, and the sync can create new tenant custom fields rather than only writing to fields that already exist. So account attributes maintained in Attio can be pushed into Plain as first class fields on the tenant, which is how most teams get account context in front of agents.

How are records matched on write?

Through identifiers you already hold. Tenants upsert on Plain's tenant identifier or an external identifier, so an Attio record identifier can serve as the key directly. Customers upsert on email address or external identifier. Companies upsert on Plain's company identifier or on domain name. Each of the three writable objects runs a single create or update mode, so a record is created if the key does not resolve and updated if it does.

What cannot be written into Plain?

Accepted Answer

Worth checking before designing the mapping. Only customers, companies and tenants accept writes at all. Within those, a customer's company membership is read only, as are customer labels and customer custom attributes, so those cannot be maintained from the CRM side. Threads, messages, notes, users, tiers, label types and the report tables are source only. Tenant domain fields are also hidden, because Plain currently returns a not yet implemented response for them.

Can support activity flow back into Attio?

Yes, and there is far more available in that direction. Reading from Plain covers the full catalogue: core records, the conversation tables of messages, notes, attachments, links, timeline events and discussions, and seven prebuilt reports covering daily thread counts by label, channel and priority, agent activity and SLA compliance. Most teams pick a narrow slice, such as open threads or last response time, and use reverse ETL to keep it on the CRM record.
