Which formats can I write?

CSV, JSON Lines, JSON array and Parquet. Parquet is the one to pick when types matter downstream, since the others push everything toward text to some degree and leave the reader to work out what a column really was.

Where do the files land?

Under your configured bucket and prefix, then an optional subfolder which new syncs default to the source connection name, then the table output. In replicate mode that is a stable path such as postgres then orders.csv. In snapshot mode it is postgres, then orders, then orders followed by an RFC 3339 timestamp.

Can I partition by date?

Not automatically. There is no source column or Hive style partitioning on this path. What you can do is use datetime expressions in the subfolder, which produces date shaped paths, and bucket prefixes are supported too. If you need real partitioning, apply it in whatever reads the files.

What write modes exist?

Accepted Answer

Replicate writes one stable file and replaces it with the current full dataset. Snapshot writes a new timestamped full file each run. Replicate with write incremental files enabled uses the snapshot layout but writes only the changes, including deletion tombstones where they apply, which is usually what a downstream loader actually wants.

Why write files rather than syncing directly?

Usually because something else owns the loading. A data warehouse with its own ingestion process, a partner who wants a drop location, or an archival requirement that a live connection cannot satisfy. Reverse ETL into object storage is the lowest common denominator that nearly every other system can read.
