Which Stripe objects can I load into ClickHouse?

The billing surface people report on: customers, subscriptions and subscription items, invoices and invoice line items, charges, payment intents, payment methods, refunds, disputes, credit notes, coupons, discounts, products, prices, plans, balance transactions, payouts and events. Together they cover recognised revenue, failed payments and churn, which is most of what finance and growth teams come asking for.

How are nulls and types handled?

Scalars are created nullable by default, so a field Stripe did not populate arrives as null rather than an empty string or a zero. Two columns are deliberately not nullable: the identity column and the version timestamp that ReplacingMergeTree sorts on, because ClickHouse does not permit nullable sorting or version columns. LowCardinality is not applied automatically either, though existing LowCardinality columns are recognised and left alone, so you can apply it yourself where it helps.

Are Stripe amounts converted to currency units?

No, and that is deliberate. Stripe holds amounts as integers in the smallest currency unit, so a ten pound charge is 1000, and that is exactly how it arrives. Dividing is a modelling decision you make downstream where you can also handle currencies with different minor units. Timestamps map to a high precision datetime type, so date filtering and time bucketing behave normally.

Can I backfill full Stripe history?

Yes. The first run pages through each object from the beginning rather than starting on the connection date, so historic invoices and charges come across. That matters more for Stripe than most sources, since revenue analysis is inherently backward looking. Large backfills are chunked into Parquet files of roughly 150 megabytes, staged in your cloud storage and pulled in from there, which keeps the initial load manageable rather than hammering the server with row inserts.

Why put billing data next to event data?

Accepted Answer

Because the interesting questions cross the two. Connecting a subscription change to what somebody actually did in the product, or a failed payment to a drop in usage, needs both in one engine. ClickHouse tends to already hold the event side, so ETL into a data warehouse brings billing to meet it rather than forcing a join across systems that were never designed to be joined.
