What can I write into Airtable from ClickHouse?

Any table in a base the connection can reach, using create, update, create or update, append and replace. Airtable views are source and model only, so you can read from a view but not write into one. On Enterprise connections Polytomic can also create tables and fields and choose the Airtable field type, which is useful when the base is being built around the sync rather than the other way round.

How does matching work given Airtable record IDs?

Two ways. Airtable's stable Record ID is exposed as a unique field you can match on with equality, which is the safest identity when your ClickHouse table already stores Airtable IDs from a previous read. Record ID itself is not writable since Airtable assigns it. Most regular fields can also be used for equality matching, so an email or an external identifier works fine when you do not hold Airtable's own IDs.

Which Airtable fields cannot be written?

Anything Airtable computes or manages itself: created and modified time, created and modified by, autonumber, barcode, rollup, count, formula and lookup fields. Button fields are not exposed at all. Attachments are supported using arrays of URLs, and linked record and multi select fields accept arrays. Worth checking your base for computed fields before mapping, since they will simply not appear as targets.

Will this hit Airtable rate limits?

Polytomic tries hard not to. Airtable permits five requests a second per base and Polytomic deliberately throttles to three, batching up to ten records per request. What it cannot control is everything else touching the same base, so automations or other API clients can still push you into 429 responses. Short term 429s are retried. Airtable also applies plan level monthly API quotas, and exhausting one of those is treated as a long term limit rather than something to retry through.

Why push warehouse data into a base?

Because Airtable is where a lot of operational work actually happens, and the people doing it will not query a database. Keeping a base fed from a model means the list they work from reflects current data rather than a paste from last month. This is the most used reverse ETL pairing out of ClickHouse that we see, which suggests it solves a real problem rather than a theoretical one.
