What should the model look like?

Usually an aggregation pipeline. Salesforce wants one flat record per account or contact, and MongoDB documents rarely arrive in that shape, so a pipeline that reshapes and aggregates before the sync reads is far cleaner than trying to correct the structure inside field mappings.

What identifies a record on the MongoDB side?

The _id field, which is exposed as a unique string field on every collection and is the safest identity to carry through. If you need to match Salesforce on something else, map that explicitly, but keep _id in the model so the sync always has a stable key to fall back on.

Which Salesforce objects accept writes?

Accepted Answer

Any standard or custom sObject that Salesforce reports as createable or updateable for the connected user. Delete mode appears where the object is deletable. Read only objects and Tooling API objects are not available as destinations, and field level permissions decide what actually appears.

How are lookups resolved?

Through the synthetic find by fields Polytomic exposes. It resolves the related record from an ID or External ID value and sets the relationship, with arrays handling multi value relationships. By default an unmatched relationship fails the row, and advanced settings let you write without it or drop the row quietly instead.

Will this be slow against my production cluster?

It depends what you point it at. A field select model over a collection is a straightforward find. An aggregation pipeline runs on the cluster, so the cost is whatever that pipeline costs. Read from a secondary if that matters, and remember tracking fields are only available on plain collection models, so a pipeline model reads in full on every run.
