What does the MySQL connection need?

A user with SELECT on the database you are reading, and nothing beyond that. Polytomic enumerates schemas, tables and views through INFORMATION_SCHEMA, so no elevated grant is involved. Custom SQL models need SELECT on every object the query references, including anything reached across databases.

What can I write to in Salesforce?

Any standard or custom sObject that Salesforce reports as createable or updateable for the connected user. Delete mode appears where the object is deletable. Read only objects and Tooling API objects are not available as destinations, and field level permissions decide what actually shows up.

How is the matching record found?

You pick the MySQL field and the Salesforce identity field, with exact equality by default, plus substring and web domain matching on update syncs. Record ID or an External ID is safest. In create modes a null identity produces a new record and logs a warning rather than matching something arbitrary.

Through the synthetic find by fields Polytomic exposes. It resolves the related record from an ID or External ID value and sets the relationship, and arrays of IDs handle multi value relationships. By default an unmatched relationship fails the row, and advanced settings let you write without it or drop the row quietly instead.

Can I model across tables before syncing?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and it is usually the right move. Write native MySQL SQL joining your accounts, subscriptions and usage tables into a single result, then map that to Salesforce. Doing the join in the database is far cheaper than running three syncs and trying to reconcile them inside the CRM afterwards.
