Which SendGrid objects can MySQL write to?

Accepted Answer

Marketing contacts, and a specific marketing list, which upserts the same contact records and adds them to that list. Polytomic can create a new list during setup. Campaigns, templates, transactional messages, suppressions and senders are not accepted. SendGrid is destination only, so it cannot act as a model source.

How should I build the model that feeds this?

Accepted Answer

As a SQL query rather than a raw table, in most cases. SendGrid wants one row per contact with the attributes already resolved, so a join across your users, subscriptions and activity tables produces a cleaner import than syncing a table and hoping the shape fits. Only create or update is supported and an identity is required, chosen from email, contact ID, external ID, anonymous ID or phone number ID.

Will contacts removed from my query disappear from SendGrid?

Accepted Answer

No, and this is the constraint to design around. There is no delete, update only, append or replace mode, so a contact that disappears from your MySQL model remains in SendGrid indefinitely. Suppression has to be handled on the SendGrid side or by a separate process of your own.

Can the sync provision a custom field?

Accepted Answer

Yes, as text, number or date. Names cap at a hundred characters and allow only letters, digits and underscores, so a MySQL column carrying a hyphen or a space in its name needs aliasing in the model before SendGrid will accept it.

Are there size or formatting limits?

Accepted Answer

Import chunks cap at a million records or five gigabytes, which most syncs never approach. Dates go across in month, day, year order, so if you are storing a date as a string in MySQL rather than as a DATE column, cast it properly in the model before it goes anywhere.
