What can I write to SendGrid?

Marketing contacts, and a specific marketing list, which upserts the same contact records and adds them to that list. Polytomic can also create a new list during setup. It does not accept campaigns, templates, transactional messages, suppressions or senders. SendGrid is destination only here, so it cannot act as a model source.

How does matching work?

Accepted Answer

Only create or update is supported, and an identity is required. The allowed identity fields are exactly five: email, contact ID, external ID, anonymous ID and phone number ID. Polytomic sends these straight through SendGrid's asynchronous contact import upsert rather than querying SendGrid first to find the record.

Can it remove contacts?

Accepted Answer

No, and this is the limitation to plan around. There is no delete, update only, append or replace mode, so a contact that disappears from your PostgreSQL model stays in SendGrid indefinitely. If suppression matters to you, manage it on the SendGrid side or with a separate process rather than expecting the sync to handle it.

Can I add a custom field?

Yes, as text, number or date. New field names are capped at a hundred characters and may contain only letters, digits and underscores, so a Postgres column with a space or a hyphen in its name needs aliasing in the model before it will be accepted.

Are there size limits?

Accepted Answer

Import chunks cap at a million records or five gigabytes, generous enough that most reverse ETL syncs never come close. One formatting detail is worth knowing: dates are sent in month, day, year order, so if you are storing dates as text in Postgres rather than as a date type, cast them properly in the model first.
