How do I sync Snowflake to Google Sheets?

Build a model on top of Snowflake, either by picking a table or writing SQL, then point it at a spreadsheet and tab and choose how to write. There are two modes. Replace clears the rows in the tab and writes the current result, keeping any frozen header rows. Append starts after the last row with content in it. Set a schedule and the tab stays current without anyone exporting a CSV.

Can Polytomic update specific rows in a sheet instead of replacing them?

No, and it is better to know that up front. There is no key based update in place mode for Google Sheets, so you cannot match a row and edit it while leaving its neighbours alone. In practice this rarely matters, because the usual pattern is to let Polytomic own a data tab with replace, then build the formulas, pivots and charts people actually look at on separate tabs that read from it.

How many rows can I sync into a Google Sheet?

Accepted Answer

The real limit is Google's cap of 10 million cells per spreadsheet, so your row capacity is roughly 10 million divided by the number of columns you write. A 20 column model gives you about 500,000 rows before the spreadsheet is full. Individual cells are also cut off at 50,000 characters. If you are near either limit, that is usually a sign the data belongs in a reporting tool rather than a sheet.

Does this re-query all of Snowflake on every run?

Not necessarily. Model syncs are differential by default, which means Polytomic runs the model query, works out which rows are new or changed, and sends only those. You can also set one or more tracking fields, normally something like an updated at column that always moves when a row changes. After the first full read, later queries use the saved high water mark, which keeps Snowflake compute down on large models.

Why use reverse ETL to a spreadsheet instead of just exporting a CSV?

Because an export is right once. Finance and operations teams live in spreadsheets, and the moment someone downloads a CSV it starts going stale, then somebody edits their copy and two versions disagree. Reverse ETL from your data warehouse keeps one tab fed on a schedule, so the definitions stay the ones your data team agreed, while the people who prefer a spreadsheet carry on working the way they like.
