What can I write from BigQuery into Intercom?

A lot of other Intercom data can be read, including contacts, tags, conversations, admins, teams and tickets, but it is source only, so you can pull it into your data warehouse without being able to push to it. The writable set is the useful one anyway, since it holds the attributes an agent sees when a conversation opens.

How do I attach an Intercom user to the right company?

Include the company identifier as a column in your model and map it. Leads and users can be associated with a company in the same sync, so the person and their account arrive linked rather than needing a second pass. It is worth getting right because the useful context in support is nearly always company level, things like plan, renewal date or account value, and an unattached user shows none of it.

What if someone in my BigQuery model is not in Intercom yet?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the mode you choose. Update or create makes them, update only skips them, and create only makes the new ones while leaving existing matches alone. If Intercom is already fed by your product, update only is often safer, because it avoids creating duplicate people from rows that never went through your normal signup path.

How does Polytomic read from BigQuery for this sync?

It runs your model, either a table selection or custom SQL, as a BigQuery query and reads the results through the Storage Read API, which is faster than fetching rows over REST. A few situations fall back to the slower REST reader automatically, such as external tables, materialized views, or a missing read sessions permission. The fallback is transparent and should not fail the sync, though large models will take longer.

It changes what the agent sees in the first ten seconds. Without it, someone opens a conversation knowing an email address, then goes looking through other systems while the customer waits. With usage, plan and renewal date already on the record, the reply can be prioritised and written properly straight away. Reverse ETL is what keeps those fields current instead of accurate on the day someone last imported them.
