Which Intercom objects accept writes from Redshift?

Leads, users and companies. Plenty of other Intercom data can be read into the warehouse, including contacts, tags, conversations, admins, teams and tickets, but those are source only. The writable set is the useful one for this direction anyway, since it holds the attributes an agent actually sees when a conversation opens.

What Redshift access does this sync need?

Accepted Answer

Only read access, which is worth setting up deliberately. The connected user needs USAGE on each schema the model touches and SELECT on the tables or views it queries, and nothing more. No S3 permissions are involved, because the bucket exists for destination writes rather than model reads. Using a separate read only user also gives you somewhere to attach a workload management queue, which matters if the cluster is busy.

How does a user get linked to its company in Intercom?

Through a column in your model. Include the company identifier alongside the person and map it, and leads or users are associated with that company as part of the same sync rather than needing a second pass. It is worth doing from the start, because most of what actually helps an agent is company level rather than personal: which plan the account is on, what it is worth, when it renews.

What if a person in my model is not in Intercom?

It follows the sync mode. Update or create makes them, update only skips them, and create only makes new ones while leaving existing matches untouched. If Intercom is already fed by your product, update only is usually safer, since it avoids creating duplicate people from warehouse rows that never went through your normal signup path.

Is this worth it if we already set Intercom attributes from the app?

Often yes, because the two carry different things. Your application can send what it knows about a session or a plan, but it cannot easily send anything derived from billing history, support volume or a model that combines several systems. Reverse ETL fills that gap without asking engineering to build and maintain another integration, and it keeps the definitions identical to the ones your reporting uses.
