What Slack data can I sync to Snowflake?

Six tables: channels, channel members, users, messages, threads, and events if you have Slack event subscriptions set up. Reactions and files are not separate tables. They come through as nested fields on messages and threads, so you can still get at them, just not as their own rows. The users table includes the deleted flag Slack keeps, so deactivated accounts are visible rather than missing.

Does the Slack bot need to be in every channel?

For messages, yes. The reader can only pull message history from channels the bot has joined, so a channel nobody added it to will simply have no messages in your data warehouse. Archived channels are skipped. Private channel history needs the groups history permission on top. It is worth doing an audit of which channels matter before the first run, because this is the most common reason data looks incomplete.

How far back can I sync Slack message history?

Accepted Answer

Polytomic does not set a cutoff, and you can configure one per object if you want to limit it. After the first load, messages and threads read incrementally per channel with a lookback that catches edits, 14 days by default. What you actually get still depends on your Slack plan retention and what your app can reach. One warning: on Slack's restricted non Marketplace tier the API returns about 15 messages per page and allows roughly one history request a minute, so a large backfill can be extremely slow.

Are deleted Slack messages removed from Snowflake?

Only if you turn on event updates. Ordinary polling does not reliably catch deletions. With the Slack event updates setting enabled for bulk syncs, and matching event subscriptions configured in Slack, Polytomic emits deletes for messages and replies, channels and private groups, and channel memberships. Worth knowing that webhooks are not guaranteed to arrive, so if exact reconciliation matters, add a periodic full read as a backstop.
