PlanetScale Vitess

Polytomic connects PlanetScale Vitess to your data warehouse, databases, and SaaS tools for database ETL and reverse ETL. Replicate tables into your data warehouse and other systems using Vitess change data capture across every shard, and write modelled data back into your keyspace, without writing code.

Change Data Capture (CDC)

Polytomic reads from Vitess VStream for streaming changes rather than scanning full tables.

Per shard checkpoints

Progress tracked as a VGTID vector with a position for every shard.

Verified TLS throughout

Encryption is mandatory and certificates are properly verified.

What you can sync

Move data between PlanetScale Vitess and your data warehouse, databases, and SaaS tools, in both directions.

From PlanetScale Vitess

Tables and views in your keyspace
Change data capture through Vitess VStream
All shards, discovered and streamed together
Custom SQL as a model source

To PlanetScale Vitess

Tables in your configured keyspace
Create, update, create or update, and replace
Incremental merge keyed on the primary key
Tables created and columns migrated as sources change

How it works

Polytomic can sync from PlanetScale Vitess by streaming changes from the Vitess VStream. Shards are discovered automatically and progress is tracked as a per shard, so a database that scales out horizontally still produces one coherent change stream that Polytomic reads from.

Polytomic can also write to PlanetScale Vitess from any other databases, data warehouses, cloud storage buckets, or SaaS applications like Salesforce, Zendesk, Google Sheets, and others.

  • Connect with hostname, credentials, and your keyspace
  • Read tables and views, or write custom SQL as a model source
  • Enable replication for shard aware change data capture
  • Shards discovered automatically and streamed together
  • Write back with create, update, create or update, and replace
  • Monitor sync health, record volume, and failures from one interface

How to set up

Supply the hostname, username, password, keyspace, and MySQL port. TLS is mandatory and certificates are verified against system roots, so unlike plain MySQL there is no option to skip verification. An SSH tunnel is available if the endpoint is not directly reachable.

How to get connected
  1. 1In PlanetScale, create credentials for the branch you want to connect
  2. 2Note the hostname, keyspace, and MySQL port for that branch
  3. 3In Polytomic, navigate to Connections, then Add Connection, then PlanetScale Vitess
  4. 4Enter the hostname, credentials, and keyspace, adding an SSH tunnel if needed
  5. 5Test the connection
  6. 6Select tables, enable replication if you want change capture, and click Save

See the documentation for full setup details.
